Children grow and learn in predictable ways. Understanding how children build skills in different areas helps you make choices that match their age and stage. This includes motor skills, language, thinking, emotions, and social development.

Each child is unique. Children show different interests, abilities, learning styles, and temperaments. Paying attention to what each child enjoys, struggles with, or is ready to try helps you offer the right level of support.

Families and communities shape how children see the world. Culture influences communication, routines, values, traditions, and expectations. When educators understand a child’s background, they can make choices that feel welcoming and respectful.

Trauma can influence environments by increasing the need for spaces that feel safe, predictable, calm, and responsive. Children who have experienced trauma may be more sensitive to noise, transitions, crowding, lack of control, or unexpected changes, so the environment should reduce stress and support regulation through clear routines, cozy spaces, thoughtful lighting and sound, and accessible materials.
